In class we are studying figurative language and were asked to write a short description of a beautiful scene using figurative language.
I walk down the beach towards the cool and rushing water. The water is a murky green-greyish hue which seems to glow as the sunshine reflects off the crashing and foaming waves. A breeze whistles in my ear like a flute as my hair is sent rushing around my head as if it were a tornado, whipping and rotating around the stationary planet that is my head. I see in the distance giant sailing ships that look to me like ants floating in a giant abyss.
I take my first step into the arctic-like water and immediately pull out my foot as if it were just bitten by a spider. I leave my foot above the water hovering like a seagull before catching its prey in order to regain feeling. After some time my foot begins to feel like a foot again so I plunge it back into the water and enjoy the feeling of the dark pebbly sand rushing in and out of my toes. After growing custom to the chilling feeling of the icy water I take another step now submerging both legs up to my knees. I yelp like a wounded dog after feeling tiny knife cuts by the freezing water prickling my leg. As I stand there, the water lapping higher and higher up my leg as waves come crashing in to shore I hear a young girl’s high pitched shriek like a dinosaur as her brother splashes her. I then continue wading through the thick jello of water, the current pushing back my legs as if hands were reaching out from under the water and pulling me back. All of a sudden I hear a whoosh above me like a giant bird is flying over me and look up and see a beautiful red and yellow dragon kite soaring high above my head. It climbs higher and higher in the sky like an airplane as it moves farther and farther out above the water. I begin to run after the kite, dragging my brick legs along with me as I rush farther and farther into the cold sticky salt water. Finally, I raise my arms above my head like I’m going to take flight and plunge my entire body into the cold dark waves. As soon as I do I feel the chilling water pricking my scalp like a thousand tiny sewing pins. My entire body burns from the cold and in surprise I let out my breath like an unclosed balloon. This causes me to jump up and gasp for breath as I struggle to breathe. After I catch my breath I smile to myself and submerge myself in the water once more. This time I don’t feel as shocked but instead I feel the calm current taking my body this way and that like a gentle rollercoaster. This time instead of jumping up I swim forwards into the waves as easily as a seal. After my lungs begin to catch fire I come up and take a gasping, raspy breath. After I wipe my eyes I see the sand as black as coal swirling like a whirlpool beneath the glass surface of the water.
